Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is one of the most beautiful and unique national parks in the United States. The park is stunning, showing off nature in its finest colors and textures, a work of art that has been created over millions of years. Located near Moab, Utah, millions of people travel to the area to see the one of a kind landscape found only in this special area. 
President Lyndon Johnson established this area as a National Park in 1964 “for the inspiration, benefit and use of the public”, identifying its “superlative scenic, scientific and archeological features” as worthy of being set aside and protected. The area is Utah’s largest national park, encompassing over 335,000 acres created and carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. This left three distinct topographic regions named Island in the Sky, The Maze and The Needles.
Island in the Sky
is the most accessible area, therefore, the most visited. With incredible overlooks, Canyonlands National Park looks so much like the Grand Canyon that it has been used as such in movies such as Thelma and Louise and passed off as the Grand Canyon.
Island in the Sky, easily reached by car, is not to be overlooked. Its awe inspiring overlooks are magnificent, and if you are up to hiking the area, you are in for an amazing treat. Hiking is easy and very accessible, and offers views that won’t be found anywhere else. Mesa Arch, perched on the edge of a cliff, is one of the most spectacular arches in the park, overlooking the steep canyon below. If you are up for a more intense, bolder adventure, a four wheel drive excursion down Shafer Canyon Trail is in order. This is a steep trail, but a once in a lifetime adventure. Beyond these areas is The Needles, featuring tall and majestic spires reaching toward the azure skies above. The Maze District, which is quite remote, is worth a trip. The human sized Petroglyphs are
spectacular, well preserved, historically important and rarely seen by many people. A four wheel drive to the site is an excursion that you will never forget.
Canyonlands National Park is located in Southeastern Utah 30 miles west of Moab, a vibrant small town on the banks of the Colorado River. Moab offers hotel accommodations, a variety of dining, arts, music and other activities.
There are easy hikes to Mesa Arch, Grand View Point and White Rim Overlook – all located in the Island in the Sky District. More moderate hikes will take you to Upheaval Dome, Aztec Butte and Neck Spring in the same area. Don’t forget to visit the spectacular Arches National Park, also located near Moab Utah.
