Lake Powell is the United States’ second largest man made lake. It is 186 miles long and encompasses 1,960 miles of shoreline, which is longer than the entire west coast of the United States. In some areas, Lake Powell is over 500 feet deep, and it is located mostly in Utah with a smaller portion in Arizona near the town of Page. The lake is known for a large variety of activities and is surrounded by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Glen Canyon Dam is claimed by Arizona, and is almost a third of a mile across from one rim of the canyon to the other. It took 17 years to build the dam and fill it to its present level (in 1980), which fluctuates depending on the amount of snow and rainfall each year. The area was established by Congress in 1972, is a total of 1.25 million acres, and is visited by over three million people every year.

Some of the most popular areas of Lake Powell include, Glen Canyon Dam, Rainbow Bridge, Bullfrog Marina , Wahweap Marine, Halls Crossing Marine, Hite and Dangling Rope Marine. The lake is full of serene canyons and deserted coves, perfect for docking you houseboat and having a ball.

There are several marinas that have a variety of houseboat and watercraft rentals, and once you are in the water and away from whatever marina you set out from, you will arrive in a magnificent place hidden from all the signs of city life, blending into the serene deep blue water contained by the rusty cliffs and majestic spites and surrounded by exquisite natural beauty. Whether you choose Bullfrog, Wahweap, Hite, Dangling Rope or Halls Crossing, all of the marinas will be your access to a hidden world of canyons and coves.

Many other activities abound at Lake Powell, such as swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water-skiing, hiking and sightseeing. This is a stunning area for photographers, especially capturing the contrast between the clear, deep cobalt water and the red rock cliffs. Hiking, off roading and other activities are plentiful, as well. In addition, those who are more adventurous can take a scenic flight by plane or helicopter, getting a bird’s eye view of the lake and the 96 awe-inspiring canyons extending from the main channel below.

From early June to at least mid-October the water warms up reaching and staying at about 70 degrees, and because the lake is at 3,700 feet in the high desert, there is little humidity and the air is quite dry, making hiking, fishing and other pursuits quite comfortable. It is not unusual to see houseboats gently floating along on the lake, their occupants taking the opportunity to take their time enveloping the scenic landscape around them.

Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area have become quite popular for both locals and visitors.
