Southern Utah
Quite often when people think about visiting Utah they think about Salt Lake City and other Central and Northern areas. True, there are many places to go and things to do in Northern Utah; however, there are just as many exciting things to do in Southern Utah that just don’t get as much press. In the span between Beaver, Parowan, Cedar City and St. George there are excellent ski and snowboarding areas that people visit from around the country and the world.
Hiking and biking are favorites among the red rock mountainsides and the trails and overlooks into Bryce and Zion . There are many places to take short hikes or bike rides, as well as all day, overnight and multi-day/night trips. On top of all that, the weather is more moderate than in the northern part of the state, with St. George holding a comfortable temperature year round, which is good news for golfers who visit any of the myriad of golf courses in the area.St. George is the largest city in Southern Utah and hosts many historical features, including one of the homes of Brigham Young. In addition, specialty shops, restaurants and other attractions can fill an enjoyable afternoon or evening. Nearby Tuachan Outdoor Amphitheatre is host to Broadway-quality plays and musicals under the stars, and St. George Dinner Theatre offers shows from all ends of the spectrum. Both theaters offer various special discounts if you call in advance.
For those who like the snow, world class snow boarding and skiing – including reasonable lessons – are available in the Cedar City area up in Duck Creek and Brian Head. If you’re not looking to ski or snowboard, there are snow mobiles and other vehicles that are lots of fun, or you can rent a cabin or condo and sit by the fire while everyone else gets chilly outside! In the summertime, the same areas offer great fishing, hiking, biking and other outdoor activities.

Between St. George and Cedar City are the towns of LaVerkin and Hurricane, small towns that lead you back to life in Utah during a simpler time. There are also areas that are easy to get to, such as Kolob Canyons, which are only 10 to 15 minutes from main highway, but offer stunning views of the majestic cliffs and canyons hidden by the mountains off Highway 15. There are lookout points, short hikes to waterfalls and a close-up and personal look at the amazing natural architecture that is the masterpiece and centerpiece of this area.
Some scenic trips to take while in the area are to Lake Powell , which is crystal clear, well maintained and surrounded by coral cliffs against the pristine blue of the lake waters. There are many activities at Lake Powell – both in and out of the water – including house boating. If you have never stayed on a houseboat before you might want to try this fun and relaxing adventure. In addition to Lake Powell, you are at the gateway to Zion National Park, Quail Creek State Park – a great, semi-isolated fishing area yielding trout, bass and blue gill; and Snow Canyon State Park, offering short hikes through the beautiful sandstone landscape.
It is easy to travel from St. George or Cedar City to other destinations, as well. Arizona is right next door, and Las Vegas is a little over an hour from St. George, with the small town of Mesquite along the way.
Whatever your interest, Southern Utah is an area not to be missed. Whether you have a little time or a lot, you are certain to find exciting and fun activities to fit your personality and your plans.
